Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” gets bad reviews

brad pitt

The Hollywood Reporter put out one of the first reviews of Quentin Tarantino’s new movie Inglorious Basterds starring Brad Pitt and a lot of Eli Roth (director of the Hostel movies):

History will not repeat itself for Quentin Tarantino. While his
”Pulp Fiction” arrived late at the Festival de Cannes and swept away the
Palme d’Or in 1994, his World War II action movie “Inglourious Basterds”
merely continues the string of disappointments in this year’s Competition.

The
film is by no means terrible — its running time of two hours and 32 minutes
races by — but those things we think of as being Tarantino-esque, the long
stretches of wickedly funny dialogue, the humor in the violence and outsized
characters strutting across the screen, are largely missing.

  1. The film is a mess. It fails on so many levels. This film was a bigger rip off than Grindhouse, the last Tarantino disaster, which by the way was a box office flop and which the critics also hated. Seriously, what kind of disturbed pre-adolescent moron could sit thru this trash? The Tarantio “hype” machine is flooging this movie and hoping they can fool some people into theatres before word of mouth kills it. Thank you for this excellent review. I

  2. I kinda expect this to be The Dirty Dozen with way too much awful dialog. Maybe he stole from some other movies in this one too, but I doubt it. He is a plagiarist pure and simple. See City on Fire and tell me Reservoir Dogs isn’t the same movie.

  3. screw the critics the same happened with watchmen, they don’t get a lot of movies, i don’t care if they studied film criticism or whatever is called, i think ill enjoy the movie and will have the usual tarantino style

  4. HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY……….DID HE SAY….THE FILM WAS …….TERRIBLE…!!!!????!!!!………………OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO……..K

  5. So people are upset that it’s not a Pulp Fiction clone? Whatever, I’m definitely going to be seeing this film when it comes out.

Oh you know what I bet QT gives a flyin frick. Its a known fact that QT doesnt make movies for the masses he makes movies cause its his passion. This movie will rock and Im glad the critics are bashing it. It will keep all the talking, phone answering idiots punks that ruin most of my movie experiences as it is. CANT WAIT!!

Hey, just curious, but if you’re gonna say that there are better directors than Tarantino, could you please say who they are? I’m not saying that they don’t exist. I’m just wondering who people like.

Diane Kruger, one of the lead actesses claimed tarantino had more close-ups of her feet than of her face. I wish you would do a quentin movie Olivia.

  9. Quentin Tarantino… a no-talent wonder. I saw Pulp Fiction for the first time ten years after it’s initial release… and it was every bit as lame and stupid as I originally predicted it would be. One day I may tell you why I delayed seeing it.

  10. I have seen the trailer and I have to call shenanigans on this one….critics are snobby little shits anyway….

  11. Fuck that i am there night it comes out

I am not sure. I will probably still see it.

  13. I think Brad Pitt is great for a Tarantino role. It’ll probably be better than you think.

  14. thats bogus. my mind will not be swayed by reviews. i WILL see this.

  15. This movie looks great! “This is Boogman2112 and I’ve got a comment”

  16. Who cares that it got bad reviews. Let the fans decide about the movie. Yes, Tarantino is a bit of a d-bag, but he is still a talented filmmaker. The fact that it is not like his other films may be a good thing.

  17. This Hollywood Reporter critic is retarded. What is so wrong with Quentin Tarantino wanting to do a serious movie or something different from the movies he has put out before? Directors do have the right to try a different direction with a film. Maybe it’s missing all the usual Quentin Tarantino stuff because it is a World War II movie and Tarantino doesn’t think that World War II is something to laugh about. Either that or maybe he didn’t put all that stuff in there as a sign of respect to those who were involved in World War II. Or maybe he just wanted to try something different. He shouldn’t be given a bad review because it’s not like his other stuff. If a two hour and 32 minute movie “races by”, then it has to be a good movie because you get caught up in the story and the people.

  18. Brad Pitt and Mr. Q to the T? Hmm. Odd matchup.

  19. I love all of his movies, so I am still going to see. No matter what people say.

  20. I’m not a Tarantino fan, so I’ll probably skip this.

  21. Hell, a “bad” Tarantino movie still has to be better than a good Michael Bay movie. I’m still going.

  22. I read the script when it leaked online. I liked it. I’m going to go see it.

  23. Meh.. Its an other world war II movie. The trailer looks interesting and has grabbed my attention. It looks like Tarantino will have some slick glamorized killing in this flick. But I’m basing this comment on the trailer and not on the review of the reviewers. RK

  24. Heaven forbid that a director doesn’t do the exact same thing everytime he gets behind a camera! Critics are just overstuffed with their own precious egosand more often than not don’t know a good film when it comes up and bites off their tiny little weiners! (with hot sauce!)

  25. I get tired of “classic” Tarantino real quick. The overblown violence, the dialogue that sounds like it’s written by a 12 year old who still giggles every time he hears the F-word… meh. It’s entertaining in short bursts. If this ISN’T like that and just tries to be a good WWII movie I might actually like it. Unfortunately for him, some of his core fans won’t see it cuz it’s not the same old stuff and non fans won’t see it because a lot of them will just assume it IS.

  26. saw it coming honestly…

  27. God, Brad is sexy.

  28. When i saw the trailer… I kinda of thought it was a bit retarded- and that brad Pitt didn’t fit the role very well.

  29. Every person has his or her own preferences. Just because critics don’t give it a good review, it doesn’t mean it will not be enjoyable

  30. Who cares. I guess that sucks if it’s not Terantino on his A game, but it IS Terantino, so I’m going to see this anyway.

  31. I am not surprised Tarantino tends to be bit overated

  32. I’m still looking forward to it. I gotta say it does look entertaining

  33. His problem with it is it didn’t remind him enough of QT’s earlier films? That’s fucking lame. Just the film like you don’t know who made it, judge it on it’s own. He said a 2.5 hour film just flew by. That speaks volumes to me: it’s a great film. FAIL on the Hollywood Reporter. Very douchey.

  34. Never saw a Tarantino film I really cared for that much. He’s not bad per se, but there’s so many better directors out there.

  35. Shenanigans2099 | May 20, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Its a movie about World War2, what the hell was the guy expecting? Im seeing this regardless of any “bad” review some jackass gives it.

  36. Eh, critics suck, I am seeing this regardless.

  37. maybe they’re still upset about what he did with Jackie Brown?

  38. His ego may be able to handle a bad review, hope he’s ok.

  39. VoltronShakespeare | May 20, 2009 at 11:53 am

It at least looks better than Terminator, which has also been receiving rather weak reviews. I’ll still see both.

  40. The trailers looked decent enough to me.

  41. I don’t like going to see a movie with preconceived notions. I don’t judge it on past movies.

  42. im going to see it regardless of any review.

  43. Was i one of the few not really looking forward to this.. I feel like ive been burned lately by him

  44. weston sebree | May 20, 2009 at 11:38 am

show me some love beatiful munn

  45. I don’t know, this worries me a little bit. This is a magazine who’s reaction to Tarantino’s films has been similar to mine. I.E. loved all of them and more importantly realized how much better Death Proof is than Planet Terror. Still, it’s Tarantino. I love every single one of his films, don’t see this being any different.

  46. To hell with what the critics say. Let the fans decide. Critics have no idea what the hell they are talking about most of the time anyway.

  47. fuck the hollywood reporter!!!

  48. Brandon Buckingham | May 20, 2009 at 11:15 am

The general public do not listen to critics so it does not matter what they say.
