All this is very constructive but I thought I would add some advice since I also suffer from (albeit minor) anxiety.
I didn't get much play in high school, by not much I mean none, due to the fact that I wasn't comfortable in who I was. I was a bit nerdy, skinny, and marginally popular. Then I joined the Navy and went far away from everything and everyone I was comfortable with. I saw an opportunity to reinvent myself into the guy that I always wanted to be and I ran with it.
I took it upon myself to metamophose into basically my alter ego, an having been in character for so long it has become who I am. And I am glad I did it. I got tattooed, got a bitchin' haircut, changed my wardrobe, played the part of who I really wanted to be. I felt comfortable doing this because I was in a new environment where nobody knew who I was. No one had any preconceived notions about me, what they saw had to be the real me. And it was the real me, but I was just too damn nervous to pull it off before.
I said before that I also have a bit of anxiety. Well I get panic attacks sometimes when I feel ovewhelmed due to my enochlophobia. That is why I don't go into big public places, only when it is a must. This drove me to socialize in smaller, more intimate (non sexual, I know how that sounds) settings. Being in those places (ie neighborhood pubs v nightclubs) forced me to have more face-time with real people. But now I had been endowed with my new found confidence and found it so much easier to interact.
That being said, you don't have to go to the extreme and get a tattoo, but find a way to reinvent yourself. Take the new you to anyplace you don't normally go (Starbucks) and get in the mix. You can be whoever you want, then assimilate your old beneficial qualities into the new you. It worked great for me.

here's an example of what it mans to be confident.
i was reading a book about personally development and the author used this example of what it means to be confident.
there is this really fat guy that seems to be smiling and just the life of any party he is at. beautiful women are all over him. how is this fat, jovial guy able to get all those beautiful women. well it turns out he is worth over $100 million. thus he has a "i can care less attitude' whether any women rejects him or not. he can move to the next one.
now it's the same kinda confidence if a guy is good looking. if some chick rejects him HE KNOWS he can get another.
here's another example. if you were in a room with 100 other guys and had to compare yourself to them on all attributes(lets say 10 attributes... looks, intelligence, success, wealth etc etc) and you feel that you are up there with the best of them then of course you will be confident. if you dont feel you are near the top then of course you confidence will be low BUT you can work on those areas that will then bring your confidence up.

Was the fat guy Kevin Smith? His confidence didn't help him on Southwest Airlines.
Will the other 100 guys be naked? Are any of them named Vinnie? Guys named Vinnie are generally pretty damn cool, so that might lower my confidence since my name is not Vinnie.
Ever notice Jay Leno's chin is really, really huge? Will he be at the party? My chin would look like a 10 compared to his. Unless you dig big chins. Damn it, now my chin is too small compared to his.
Why doesn't L. Ron Hubbard write about chins more often?

here's how to get your confidence up:
intelligence: you need any work on this? maybe you need to read more. get more knowledge inside your head. be a very very "well read" individual.
face: did you win the genetic lottery? if not then maybe get plastic surgery or you can just live with it.
body: are you skinny or fat? work out. get muscle on your body. get a six pack. did wonders for "the situation"
dangerous/tough: you a badass? can you beat down another man in a bar fight if one breaks out? maybe you need some jiu jitsu. some muay thai.
wealth: no money? no fucking honey bitch. maybe you need to get a higher paying job. drive a BMW to impress them shallow bitches. may not be "who you are" but ur cock will thank you.
fame: makes it real easy to start a conversation in a busy pub if there is a chance that the chick might know who you are. it's an incebreaker. the girl will be like "do i know you from somewhere?"
there are more attributes you can work on then just these. pick one or two from this list and WORK ON THEM.

he was comparing himself indirectly to me and at the same time announcing to the world that he is witty. he has me beat in wit. one of the attributes that i may or may not lack.
im sure it gives him some confidence in himself because of it.
the same with you thread starter. im sure there are attributes about yourself that you are confident about and others that you lack. my point is to work on those areas that you lack until you bring it up to a level that makes you feel confident about yourself OVERALL.
