Okay FG'ers, I have a request. I am a film glutton. As such, I require that I have at least a moderately respectable niche of films in each genre that I can recommend, if nothing else than for appearances sake.

    But I hate horror movies.

Wait, no, that's a generalization. I find slasher movies violently boring and often formulaic. However, I watched 1980's version of The Thing with Kurt Russel, and I really enjoyed it.

So it would take me a while to really think about it, but off the top of my head, The Thing and 28 Days Later are the only films in my Horror Genre Recommendations.

And as such, I need your expertise.

That being in mind, don't bring slashers to this table unless you really truly think I would be remiss in not giving it a chance. I'm willing to swallow my pride and rent it if you're willing to eloquently list why it's worth renting.

Also, I am in the mode of questioning any director's work who is part of that "Everything they touch turns to gold" phenomenon (a.k.a. uh....George Romero and the like)

    So what do you think?
    Help meeee.

The Thing is fucking epic, and both the 28 Days movies are good (though they have vastly different feels to them; Days was isolationist horror, and Weeks was more societal, widespread terror).

Although it's quite dated now, Prince of Darkness was quite a scary movie back when it came out.

I'll try to think of some good ones for you

Any of you homos touch my stuff... I'll kill ya.

    Definitely The Shining.

I'm not really into horror movies, so I can't really help you here. But, I do like Tarantino Grindhouse movies... but I don't really know what genre you would consider that.

I don't really care for horror movies either but Army of Darkness is a fun ride.

Why are you reading this? I have nothing to say to you.

Shutter!!!! The original, definitely not the American one.
Battle Royale, Old Boy, Audition, Ichi the Killer, The Host, just saw Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and enjoyed the scalping.

My personal recommendation if you want to be scared is The Quiet.

Does Old Boy really qualify as horror? It's more a suspense drama I think. And a really fucked up one at that.

Yeah the only movie that scares me is 28 days later, so I just put up some good movies.

Re-Animator gets my vote. Jeffrey Combs turns in a performance that stands the test of time (how can this film possibly be almost 25 years old?!) and Barbara Crampton was so hot she needed to be cloned so we could all have one.

I am obsolete. This must be what old people feel like. And Blockbuster.

I dunno, Oldboy was pretty horrific. But more in a greek tragedy sort of way.

Okay so here's the list so far:

    Prince of Darkness
    The Shining
(I saw the shining when I was very young, but all I remember is how gangly the wife was and his facial expression in the snow at the end)
    Army of Darkness
(Now here's one I've always been confused about. I could spend time on imdb but that's not conducive to a good forum convo, so I'll ask here. I've seen parts of this I think, and it had Bruce Campbell in it, and I know there's more than one, but are some of them sort of funny and the others serious horror? Or what's going on there?)
    the original Shutter
    Re-Animator
Battle Royale (Read the book, never knew whether the movie was worth searching for)
    Audition
    The Host

Anything else I left out I've seen.

I would like this list to grow large, however, since no one has recommended anything that's made me gag, and that's a good sign because I've got a rather large list of horror's I hate.

Thanks again everyone, let's keep this going.

Oh also, on the subject of Japanese horror, anything to recommend?

If you are gonna see Army of Darkness, you gotta see the two Evil Dead movies first. They were the prequels to that movie. I suggest seeing Evil Dead 2 personally, since it is more a retelling of the first one than a sequel.

Okay, I'd be down to watch all of them.

Do you mean I should skip Evil Dead 1 entirely?

There is an Evil Dead, then Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness is Evil Dead 3. All written/directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell. Evil Dead 2 is *sorta* a remake of the first, because the story is basically a repeat, but it has a much bigger budget so it looks better and the effects are a lot better. Technically it is a sequel, but I think you'd be fine just starting with it.

Evil Dead 2 does have some comedy bits in it, and classic Bruce one-liners, but Army of Darkness is a little goofier, with a couple of homages to the Three Stoges even. Can't go wrong with any of them, but if you only saw only one I'd probably rate Evil Dead II just a bit higher than Army of Darkness.

You can watch it if you really want to. Evil Dead 2 is more or less the same exact movie, except better. Scarier, funnier, better effects, etc. Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi made the first one on little to no money. 2 was essentially what they wanted the first one to be. Plus, Evil Dead 2 literally links to Army of Darkness. The ending of 2 is the beginning of AOD.

Brisco County Jr was an awesome show!

I would say Evil Dead II if you choose to dabble in Raimi horror. I LOVE his movies, but they have almost as much humor as horror, and are a bit over the top. As mentioned, Army of Darkness is more goofball.

No offense to GoodEats, but I wouldn't recommend those picks (Battle Royale, Old Boy, Audition, Ichi the Killer, The Host). I don't think they are really horror. More gross-out, disturbing fare. Not saying they're bad, just not what you originally said you're looking for.

And I know that American remakes of Japanese horror typically suck, but the American version of The Ring was pretty effing scary.

    @ Dave-O
I also thought that the US remake of Ju-On [The Grudge] was better than the original. Ju- On put me to sleep. The pacing is so much slower than The Grudge and not nearly as scary, in my opinion.

ok well i love horror films, even really bad ones because bad horror movies = good comedies.

anyway, a lot of people have said they hated this, but i found the blair witch project to be incredible. no gore, no blood, no special effects, but it's scary as hell. i couldn't sleep the night i saw it and i don't think i could watch it again.

so i was making out with my girlfriend the other day when she called me a pedophile. pretty fucking big word for a six-year-old...

I never watched the blair witch project so it should go on the list.

and Dave-O is right. The reason for this list is I'm looking for more scary, well written stuff. I thought something was a bit off when Ichi the Killer was mentioned.

Oh also, I just remembered: I hope I'm not the only one who thought Let the Right One In was pretty much the best vampire movie ever?

Ah, never saw more than bits and pieces of the original Exorcist, I'll add that.

Stephen King books haven't been my cup of tea, when i've tried them out, and the Langoliers (sp?) movie made me want to eat my own head.

But I will give those a try

so more like Horror/Suspense instead of Horror/Gore, right?

Hmm... Re-Animator is definitely Horror/Gore, but I still recommend that.

Any chance you haven't seen the original "Alien"? Gonna call that as much a horror film as it is sci-fi.

@Seth I'd heard so much hype about "Let the Right One In" by the time I saw it that I was a bit let down. If I'd seen it expecting nothing I woulda been floored though.

@Dave-O Awesome people like awesome shows!

    Great call on Alien.

I also liked Blair Witch. It's absolute minimalism made it creepy as fuck.

Let the Right One In is on my list "to see"

Yes more like horror/suspense. I like gore as long as it's not for gore's sake (seems like there should be an al gore joke here but I can't think of one).

The first three aliens I love (yes, even three). The first one was definitely the best, but that's a series I can get behind.

Let the Right One In was good in it's subtlety. It's not the end all movie of the century but I really, really enjoyed it.

and @superjohnjohn, I watched teletubies once and I haven't been able to sustain an erection since.

Doesn't really fit, but.. A lot of people said Al Gore was the best vice president the country ever had. Not to take anything away from Al, but look at the competition. He replaced a guy who couldn't spell 'potato' and was followed by a guy who shot someone in the face.

And even though I've always thought of it as a psychological thriller, Se7en is an amazing movie, and apparently considered horror. I also liked the original Omen movies. But the last time I watched those, I was prepubescent, so take it for what it's worth.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

    Ohh I loved Se7en.

Kevin Spacey is an amazing "sociopath"

Evil children scare me, so The Omen might be a good choice. The old ones for sure, though. I've heard horrible things about the remakes.
