If they hate their jobs so much, they should not be in customer service, and leave those positions open for people that know how to be nice, or at least pretend to be in a good mood.

    1. Hello
    2. Thank you for not daring Olivia to work in customer service.
    3. Is there something in particular that brought about this topic?

Customer service can be a sucky job. Depends what/where you're working, but if you're dealing with complaints all day, and the customers are blaming you for whatever is wrong, I can see how the plastic smile could easily fade.

Only Otto's plastic smile lasts forever!

I am obsolete. This must be what old people feel like. And Blockbuster.

@Brisco- spoken like a true fellow-veteran of the customer service trenches. Where'd you serve?

Any of you homos touch my stuff... I'll kill ya.

I pay people to love customer service. That should be reason enough...

I used to take calls at this HUGE telemarketing place in Utah. Almost every infomercial and 800-number product went to it. We had to make it seem like we worked for whomever they were calling for though, so they thought they were calling the manufacturer of said product. 90% of it was people ordering stuff, but the 10% of complaints/questions were doozies.

A couple that stand out still. One woman claimed that the Wok she'd received had been used before she got it, and demanded to know who used it and wanted an apology. Even if it was used, the wok was probably sent from China, and I'm in Utah, but I can't tell her that. So I ask her what it looked like, and after she described some type of rice/chicken dish, I apologized for cooking chicken fried rice in her wok, and that I didn't know the shipment guys had packed that one.

I like to imagine that somewhere in the world there really is someone who cooked a meal in her wok, and then packed it and sent it to her, laughing their ass off as they did so.

Then had a guy incredibly belligerent because the Larry Bird limited-edition numbered gold coins he'd ordered weren't of a low enough number to be any good to him. These things were like $300.00 or something, so let that whole statement soak in. He's buying Larry Bird gold coins in the first place, and his concern is he doesn't have numbers 1 and 2? I forget if they made just 100, or 1,000 of them, but it wasn't many. Anyway, as I'm telling him he can send them back (what do I care?) he keeps yelling at me for inflating their price and value, and holding on to the lower numbers. When all was said and done, and I gave him the details to send them back, I also put in an order so he would be billed for 2 more, and they would definitely have a higher number than the ones he was returning.

Oh, and if anyone ever randomly received a Book of Mormon, followed by a visit from an LDS representative wanting to talk to you about their "gift", good chance that might have been my fault. Many a lunch hour spent randomly flipping through phone books across the US and signing people up for shit. And I was one of their good employees too!

I was the only Home Depot employee at customer service who has outright refused to take something back. I don't care who you are or how much you want to hurt me, our warranty does not cover you pouring sugar into the gas tank of your $2000 lawn mower so you could "make it last a bit longer", go to hell.

Every customer service rep has a bad call / day here and there. But I blame the managers for hiring awful reps who have a bad call every call; good managers hire good employees.

As for "if you don't like it, don't work there" I'd like to know where you work and how I can get a job there. Not all of us have limitless opportunities, even those of us who work really hard and are at least average intelligence.

In response to paying for customer service, you may want to check the numbers - if you received customer service equal to what reps are paid, trust me, it would be a lot shittier than it already is.

Lastly, I get frustrated with bad reps because I just want to cut through the BS. But since doing customer service myself, I see that I used to do things that were actually pretty irritating when I thought I was being reasonable.

Patience is key on both ends.

I worked as a CSR for several years. There are good days and bad days. It helps to have a friend work with you so that you can make fun of customers in your down time.

    Did someone mention PIE?

Well, I guess since this thread is around again:

    Worked at Convergy's.
Used to see how many times I could say "meow" in my blathering before they reacted.
