Yeah, they showed some of this on The Feed on Wednesday's AOTS. They also said there will be an option to just skip this entire scene.
I'm not sure if its really worth the controversy. Yes, it's a real world scenario, and the graphics are getting so good that makes it a bit extra creepy, but isn't it basically the same argument about violence in video games since Mortal Kombat and GTA III? Only difference is those graphics are getting so realistic.
I guess a moral question would be - does it even matter if your character is supposed to be a good guy or bad guy in the game?

i did find myself having mixed feelings.
i ,for one, killed a LOT of civilians in GTA and Prototype. just driving on the sidewalks all sorts.
but now they make you shoot unarmed people, is kinda disturbing.
IW did choose a great topic to tackle.

They were definitely looking for a shock factor, and this is a huge one. I mean, walking off an elevator and just mowing down civilians like this has got to make some jaws drop. With a franchise this big, I can already tell people are going to be asking parents to avoid this title.
But then again, how many innocent people did I totally run over running from the cops in GTA? *shrug*

It was GTA that came to my mind immediately as well. You actually drive OFF the road just to mow over pedestrians; and raise your hand if you've never shot some innocent person on the street in that game as well. 
Heck, I think it's about the first thing I did once I got a gun in the game.
Just the level of realism here seems to kick it all up a notch.

@todosho I was at that link on Gametrailers and went off on folks for acting like pussies over a freakin video game. They were crying about the airport thingy. I say, don't like, then don't buy.

This is soooo not gonna be in the german version...man, I already see the media going nuts again.
But I think it's a powerful stylistic device to reverse the roles and let you play a terrorist...even though it's a video game I (and I guess many other people too) would feel awkward and repelled shooting unarmed targets. Kind of gives one an insight what must be going on in the mind of a person like that.

wow games are getting more real with each game that comes out lol. im not only talking about graphics but im pretty sure you know what i mean, terrorist killing inocent people? thats real shit wether you like it or not. omg and the sniping mission on the first modern warfare was amazing. plus like they said you can skip it if you cant handle it.

My fav thing to do in GTA was get to the top of a tall building/parking structure, then pick off civilians with the sniper rifle.
Of course, once the police chopper came in I'd shoot it down with a rocket launcher, but that's really just self-defense.

After watching this all I could think was...awkward. I'm glad I mainly played the Multiplayer in COD4 and will probably do the same with MW2. It is great that they at least recognized the ill feelings many will have toward this scenario in the game and gave us the opportunity to opt out of the experience.

My only complaint about Modern Warfare 2's controversial airport scene is, that it would have been way cooler, if you could use a flamethrower instead of a M16.
(note: no pixelated civilians at the airport were harmed in any way....except that poor bastard by the luggage. )

the guy was using a LMG.
with a M16 he would have been reloading every 3rd person down.

@C4NT1 over the top sums up american pop culture in a nut shell. Since Infinity Ward was obviously going for shock value, I say let's turn it up way past 10. (Left 4 Dead gamers can't have all the fun)
@todosho You're probaly right, but I would still prefer to see those pixel people extra crispy.

@todosho a common clip for a M16 is 30 rounds.Even on three round burst you would reload every 10 people that you mowed down.
It reminds me of the movie Point Break when they where robbing the bank and set up Keanu Reeves for the fall. Im sure it's the same way with the game.Id be willing to bet that you can walk though the level without killing any civilians even if your not a FBI agent.
