I think they have a direction because they were told they had 2 or 3 seasons left. Forced them to make an ending and how to get to it.
And season 3 was lame, you're right.

MemberI kept thinking they should have ended the entire series last night- Faraday detonates the bomb, thus negating the existence of the hatch. 815 never crashes, but lands as scheduled in LA. Then since none of it happened, the travelers don't know each other, but vaguely recognize each other... like some sort of deja vu type feeling. They all go their separate ways, nothing is explained, credits roll, and fans worldwide erupt in alienated anger. That would be brilliant.
