I thought District 9 was wonderful. Easily one of the top films of the year so far up there with the likes of Up, Star Trek, and Watchmen....

For only a $30 million budget, I can't believe the great effects work they produced. I mean fricking GI Joe cost $175 million and D9's work blew them away.

I thought the movie took a very dark and serious matter like racism, apartheid, segregation, and hate crimes, and tilted them onto a sci-fi realm. This way they offered entertainment, but just under the surface drew some really thought provoking and difficult issues that the audiance is forced to deal with.

I loved the documentary feel of the film, it out us in the action nearly from the beginning, letting you join in the story. My only complaint (however small) is that they really lost that part in the third act where it got all action packed. It sort of became a fight sequence and lost that intimate documentary feel for a while. (I would just like to point out that I still thought the fight scene was amazing though)

Hugs and Kisses to All of Your Pink Parts.

my thoughts on District 9... shit was awesome .... and the relocation of the Prawns is like what the government is gonna do to us with FEMA camps.
Prawns losing their weapons... us losing our rights to bear arms..

    Questions:

It really took them 20 YEARS to find that fuel? And that little bit flew that giant mothership back to their planet? And how did the world know that thing wasn't gonna just drop on top of them one day?

And why did fuel turn him into an alien? Seems like a pretty odd side effect, which didn't surprise the alien at all. "Oh, you're turning into one of us? CLEARLY you ingested some of the fuel. I have a cure for just such an ailment."

Why didn't the aliens fight back if they had all this awesome technology and are that much stronger than us physically?

I still liked it, but those were the questions in my head as I walked out.

@belle in the beginning they stated that the Prawns that lived in District 9 were the "workers " aka slaves.. thats why they couldnt use their powers and technology cuz they were stupid..

.and about the fuel...ehhh idk maybe its a hidden message to us saying if we drink gasoline then we'll be cured of all diseases lmao

I discussed the fuel/transformation thing with one of my friends, and the only plausible explanation we decided on was since the Prawn's technology is so inexorably linked with their DNA, that the fuel also had their DNA in it, and for some reason it's acts like a virus, to switch other races to Prawnship.

Which is a bit fantastical but I can flow with it. Once he got sprayed and started turning I was sure the Prawns plan was to repopulate that world with Prawns with that mystery liquid, but that didn't turn out.

That opens up all sorts of other questions though, if their biology can be contracted like a disease, can they even be considered a legitimate race (what if half their population used to be like...klingon or some shit?)

My thoughts on the transformation was that it was a side effect of the fuel cell. Since the entireity of their technology was biogentical in application, then you would need a special genetic structure to operate the machinery. They hinted at the beginning that the alien race was leaderless having lost the hierarchy of thier government through disease or some such. The main prawn, Chris, was considered "smarter" than his drone friends, as evidenced through the use of computers and his son. I figured the fuel cell represents a super concentrated form of the biological matter needed.

Now when he is exposed to the concentrated form of the bio matter, that is what caused the transformation, and why low concentrations have never worked in the past.

As for the prawn being able to change him back? That's a convient plot device

    Just my interpretation.

    Good point.

And as for the convenient plot device, I agree. I think it would have been more interesting if Christopher would have just said "Tough luck, fucker, you're a prawn now."

I mean provided Wikus didn't just decide to shoot himself right then.

By the by, what with all the accents I never really caught how you pronounce his name. Is it Vikus, like you pronounce Ellie Weisel?

I thought it was like Vikus, with a V. But I agree that Christopher taking a more hardline approach might have been a more interesting move. Still teh movie was great..

@Gerrad I agree with your statement on the budget and effects. Me and my friend discussed how G.I. Joe had a budget bigger then star trek and district 9 and the cg was total crap against them. I understand peter jacksons got a team as does George lucas. Does Sommers have his own or does he just go to the same crew?

@Gerrad- The only problem I see with them making Christopher take a more "hardline approach," is that it would make him a harder character to like. By giving him so much compassion, I felt at least, you could see a more human side to him. By the end of the film it was Christopher's compassion that made him one of my favorite characters in the film.

how did they figure out the Prawn's name was Christopher Johnson? lmao & why did Borat transform into a Prawn?

@Vaughn - his name was on his eviction papers. It got one of the biggest laughs in the showing I was in.

@SG Oh I agree with you totally. The whole character development angle of Chris and the Prawns as a whole was what made the movie work. I was merely responding to a question posed by Seth. I think it was great how you really traveled a path with the aliens, from anger, to acceptance, to pity, to cheers.. great movie.

I'd like to think that the aliens were named like they used to name new immigrants to the country, just assigning them names if they were to hard to pronounce, I think it would continue the theme of segregation and domination that was so prevalent in the film.

An amazing film that is def the best sci-fi film of the year. Everything in this fim worked: the acting, the FX, the writing, the gore, the action, the depth of it. A great film!

This movie was so good, I hope Neil Blomkamp puts it in the face of Microsoft and 20th Century Fox for cancelling the Halo movie.

I agree bill, I just walked out of a (finished) district 9 session cheering. I loved it completely, and was happy to overlook any plot holes or gaps.

I was also pissed that the same crew didn't get to make the halo movie they practically had in production, and will likely never now make.

Sign me up for one of those mech suits too. That empty mech suit had more character than any of the douchebag autobots.

    /gush

I've got a good feeling about you.

@AnotherA- The only problem with having one of those mech suits is, if I remember correctly, it looked like the person piloting it could feel the pain of the mech....xP
But yes, it definitely had more character than the Transformers.

It would appear that I'm the only one who thought the movie was God aweful. Immensely slow, clunky build up to a climax that was completely predictable. There really wasn't anything that made me say wow in the way of effects either. And the ending literally made me say "what the fuck?". I fail to see the reasoning behind putting up a racial tension backdrop and leave with not a single main character having his ideology change. Sure Vickers 'trusted' Christopher eventually, but only because it was his last resort.

Maybe I missed something. I really hope I did, because this movie really failed, IMO.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

i just saw it today! it was one of the BEST movies i've seen all year! What made the movie for me is how the people died. Exploding bodies? Yes please.

    @ryan

you failed to see that it was a documentary about Wikus.
and how he was a "Traitor"

it wasn't about the humans or the aliens.
it was about Wikus and how he thought of the aliens to be Prawn's/slaves/worthless.
it showed that he was a simple guy who loved his work and looked down upon a race.

plus i don't get how you can say that the special effects did nothing.
those were some awesome looking aliens.....to top it off The GUN and the Robot.....freaking sick.

i want to go watch it again now.

No, I got that it was supposed to be a documentary about however you want to spell his name. But there was no character pregression as far as I saw. He never progressed to seeing the prawns as anything other than what he previously thought. He meerly was put into a situation where his only chance was 'trust' that Christopher could help him.

The Prawns looked just as the name suggests, prawns. Nothing mindblowing. The guns were cool, but again, nothing that blew me away.

Maybe I'm wrong, I have walked away from seeing a movie in theaters thinking "ehhh" to end up thinking more of it the next time I saw it. So I will give it another chance, just not anytime soon.

@Ryan Yeah I would have to agree with todosho. But the reason why they put a racial tension backdrop was because that's how Neil Blomkamp wanted it to be. He stated that he wanted to put things that he remembered in his childhood in South Africa during the Apartheid days (in case you didn't know, Apartheid was when the Government was separating the blacks from the whites in South Africa) so this makes perfect sense that they would have a racial backdrop. Put South African apartheid with Blomkamp's interest in sci-fi, and bam! you get District 9. You also have to remember, that this movie also had a 30 million dollar budget. And I'd have to seriously disagree with you with the special effects. For havng the budget that they had, I thought the effects were really damn good.
