Coldplay watch out- they’re everywhere!

coldplay

This is so awesome and hilarious.

So Coldplay is nominated for a ton of Grammy’s this Sunday, and will probably win a few. But, instead of celebrating, they’ll be looking over their shoulders for hidden legal servers.  Musician Joe Satriani accused the band of  copying his 2004 instrumental, “I Just Wanna Fly,” for the basic melody of “Viva La Vida.” Coldplay of course, claimed they didn’t.

Apparently it’s been hard for Satriani’s lawyer to serve Coldplay with papers, so they’re headed to the Grammys!

Satriani’s lawyer says, “We have warned their British lawyers that we have hired a fleet of process servers lined up to dog the band everywhere they go this weekend in the hopes of serving them.”

AND if that wasn’t awesome enough, they said they’ve also hired a camera crew to catch it all on tape!

Just the idea of servers hiding in the audience at the Grammys waiting to pounce on Coldplay just cracks me up… I mean, really. They couldn’t just follow the paparazzi in New York to find them? They really have to go the Grammys? Coldplay must be very good at hide and seek.

For your judgement, here’s a video of the two songs back-to-back.

  1. I don’t think much of Coldplay, but I was skeptical about them engaging in blatant copyright infringement. Skeptic, no more; they did it.

  2. squirrl’s are crazy

  3. Similar, a few notes match. reminds me of the vanilla ice case long ago.

  4. I’ll just second Corey Taylor of Slipknot’s review of Coldplay’s album Viva La Vida, something to effect “Music to sh*t to.” I think that is review enough.

dude, this is pretty retarded, i mean, ya the tempo and chord progressions are the same but theres enough differnce between the two that it shouldnt matter. I mean look at all the lame ass Nu Metal radio rock thats on the air. Every band has a song that sound just like every other bad with the same chords and tempo and everything…soooo…idk..im a satriani fan just as much as anybody but i think they are just trying to get publicity and steal the lime light.

  6. since im a guitarist, im going to side with satriani…
    Satriani FTMFW!!

  7. Can’t stand Coldplay. Sure they had one song I used to like, but even that go old fast. And now I can’t listen to it anymore. Anyway, the two are similar, but definatley not the same. But, hey, since I hate Coldplay so much, I hope Joe wins the lawsuit.

  8. Coldplay is the most overrated band of the 21st century. I have no idea why everyone loves them so much.

  9. I wish their background actually was Joe Satriani’s guitar filled version of the melody… then maybe it wouldn’t suck! Wait, sorry, yes it would, the droned out voice of Coldplay’s lead singer can ruin anything :P

  10. Meh screw coldplay…pretty od stunt thoue

  11. Coldplay sucks!

  12. Joe’s song sounds nothing like coldplays. You hear a little bit of the same beat but there in different octaves. They could get sued but i dont know if it would go thru.

  13. yes,
it is only fair to show you,
    my ugly ass grill,
    let me find a cam.

  14. i’m like sweden!hahaha!
and if satriani is a well known and respected, then how does coldplay see satriani?
    must be no respect!
    anywho,
    good mornin olive girl!
i love those boots you had on for yesterdays show.
damn you could fuck someone up with one boot!
    smokin baby!!!
    now try ‘n have a wonderful day,mama.
    if you can,pony tails today
    please,hottie mama?
if not dont trip,my love for you is endless.
    gimme a kiss……..
damn mama, who ate all the honey nut cheerios?
oh well brown sugar oatmeal is 100 times better!

  15. That’s great. Hopefully if they get the grammy they’ll get served following right after. Coldplay sucks anyway.

  16. Somewhat similar, but not the same. And, it’s not like it’s a complex melody either. Satriani is just trying to make some bucks off a successful band. Sad, really.

  17. Maybe they did. But how cares? Its Coldplay. You can pick rifts out and link them to other bands at will.

  18. Yeah I’m gonna say Coldplay will be writing a check. But I think it would be awesome if they were to win an award and this server pops up and gives it to them on the way to win an award. That would be the best haha

  19. I am gonna go with no on this one, they sound similar, but not to the extent I would call copying

  20. similar yes but not quite exactly the same. Even though I hate coldplay, why the hell would they listen to that song?

  21. Joe is one of the top musicians of our time and this wimpy band with not enough talent to make up their own material steals his music. Throw the book at ‘em I say!

  22. I’m pretty sure Coldplay has never heard Joe Satriani. If Coldplay were the type to listen to Satriani, they wouldn’t produce the unadulterated crap that they produce now. But Joe is right that Coldplay’s riff is absolutely a simplified version of the riff from his song — No question. Oh, and you can absolutely sue based on “sounds like”. Ever heard of Heart’s “sound and feel” lawsuit over Roxette’s “Listen to Your Heart”, which was successful. Hey, if the Stones can take 100% of the profits from Bittersweet Symphony based on an interchangeable orchestra riff, despite having already licensed it in the first place, then Joe can certainly claim 100% for this ripoff job, accidental or not.

  23. Ghost of Mars Special features. Buckethead humiliates Anthrax with his talent…

  24. I think Buckethead needs to sue satch for saturating the market with crap. Besides, if i didn’t know any better, i’d say that Coldplay is really nothing more than a weekend with Songsmith. *shrugs* meh.

  25. They aren’t the same

  26. I think it’s funny, because Joe Satriani is suing them for EVERYTHING not just a little chunk of money, but everything they make off that song. Coldplay sucks, and the only reason that this song is even catchy is because it was taken by a much better more talented musician. To fishman about Vanilla Ice, yes he did get sued.

  27. I think satriani’s just pissed the 80’s are over.

  28. I hate lawyers. I know there is a greedy bugger of a lawyer salivating over this entire ordeal.

  29. Did Vanilla Ice get permission to use the music from “Under Pressure” by Queen for “Ice Ice Baby”? If not, he should get sued as well… for stealing, and for that haircut… and because I bought that stupid cassette as well.

  30. Satch didn’t want to go to court, but Coldplay wouldn’t talk to him. Chris Martin is a whiny twat! but with a missus like his who could blame him!;) Let’s see if Coldplay are still going after 23 years! I very much doubt it!

  31. Dramaaa, too bad i dont watch the grammys. & the songs sound very alike.

    -Rodney

  32. If Seth Rogen served Coldplay I would spontaneously combust.

  33. another reason “why coldplay Sucks.”

  34. The Grammys are still around?

Did Jethro Tull win best heavy metal again?

    Fuckin Grammys…

    *match

  36. americaneric01 | February 5, 2009 at 2:19 am

They sound close, but not an exact math. TheIce Ice Baby vs. Under Pressure case was stronger. Though i appreciate the measures that they are taking. I would love to be a process server. it is like a combination of bounty hunter and lawyer.

  37. People hear are on coldplays side because obliviously they don’t know who satriani is. He is one of the best guitar players in the world. any real guitar player will tell you that!

  38. well, what can i say about the music biz?
    its dirty!
nowadays, artist have to learn how to move within the times, and by that i mean, dont share or perform any music, until you tied the loose ends and pushed the music out to the airwaves,
important to have an inner circle so attention is on music,NOT showing off!!
and everyso and backagain, writers have writer’s block,
yes,the cold play cock block…hee haw!
does it matter now? i’m just sayin cause coldplay is gettin airplay

  39. That would be nice to see, sure Coldplay’s security will not let it happen, the lawyer should just direct mailed it and then went to court with proof and win by default… but you just got served

  40. Awe, that is a toughie. I think it will come down the break in the song, and the structure.

I don’t think it matters if Satriani’s song was known by cold play or not,but rather if the melody overall, really is the same, as original. Hard to say from the snipets, too generic. It’s not as flagrant as George Harrison taking , the Chiffon’s “he’s so fine” for his,”my sweet lord” melody. Or John Fogerty being sued by his former label for copying CCR’s( his own compositions), “run throw the jungle”….VS. “the old man is down the road.”
    This should be interesting.

I think if Satriani is lucky, and can settle out of court, he should.

Eitherway, would be fun to see Cold Play get served at the Grammy’s. lol

  41. Coldplay….blech….

  42. eh? Whats Coldplay?

  43. Olivia 彼女は美しい。……..your so handsome lmfaoo =7

  44. HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY…….OLIVIA…….TEST…..TEST……………K

  45. Ehh, there’s similarities but I don’t think there’s enough of a direct ‘copy’ to warrant the attention Satch is giving ‘Viva La Vida’. I’m a huge fan of Joe Satriani and the G3 Tour I have a few Satriani albums and G3 Denver & Tokyo, and there’s no doubt he’s a great guitarist (he taught Steve Vai and Kirk Hammet HOW TO PLAY for Christ’s sake!). While I’m not into Coldplay that much at all, I do dig this particular song - I just feel it’s pretty dumb to pursue this ‘copyright infringement’ suit when the songs aren’t even identical. Similiar, but not so much so. Maybe just knowing that a band may be receiving a Grammy for something that sounds similar to something you wrote would be a bit disturbing and might prompt you to get a lawyer. Whatever.

  46. i have been going back and forth about this for a while now. i can’t decide if they copied them or not. i mean, it does sound SIMILAR, but definitely is NOT the SAME…

  47. Sounds like Coldplay is going to write a big check.

  48. boston should sue themselves, not be able to pay the money and get a bailout from the government or some shit.

  49. They’re similar– but not identical.
